Asphalt begins to deteriorate soon
after the pavement installation. The oxidation and decomposing effects of sun's ultraviolet
rays, combined with environmental elements begin to weather the surface.
The pavement loses flexibility due
to a steady breakdown of the asphalt binder. The pavement becomes rough and brittle.
Surface cracks start to appear, increasing in size and number over time.
Water penetrates through the cracks
and seeps into the foundation of the pavement. The trapped water weakens the foundation
and further damage occurs under traffic and seasonal freeze/thaw cycles.
Further asphalt damage is done over
time. Chunks of asphalt begin to break away and potholes quickly develop. The only
option available is asphalt replacement.
